Strong Recovery Drive Earns Points for BMW M Team WRT

NEWS

The FIA World Endurance Championship headed to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the inaugural 6 Hours of Barcelona, where mixed weather conditions and an eventful race created plenty of challenges for the Hypercar field. For BMW M Team WRT, it proved to be a race of recovery rather than outright contention, with the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 fighting from the back of the field to secure a valuable seventh-place finish.

Starting 16th on the Hypercar grid, Kevin Magnussen made significant progress during the opening stages in difficult wet conditions. A ten-second penalty interrupted the charge, but the #15 crew of Magnussen, Dries Vanthoor and Raffaele Marciello continued to work their way forward as the circuit dried and strategies unfolded. By the closing stages, BMW had moved firmly into the points positions, eventually crossing the line in seventh place after completing all 198 laps.

The sister #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 faced a more frustrating afternoon. After starting 13th, the car driven by René Rast, Sheldon van der Linde and Robin Frijns lost ground due to an additional pit stop and a penalty related to tyre pressures. Those setbacks prevented the crew from mounting a similar recovery, with the car eventually classified 14th.

At the front, Toyota dominated proceedings, securing a one-two finish to clinch the 2026 FIA WEC Manufacturers’ Championship. Ferrari completed the podium, while BMW’s focus quickly shifted from chasing the leaders to maximising points from a difficult qualifying position.

Although seventh place was not the result BMW M Team WRT had hoped for, the performance of the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 demonstrated the car’s race pace and the team’s ability to recover under challenging circumstances. From 16th on the grid to seventh at the chequered flag, the crew extracted the maximum available result from a difficult weekend and added further championship points ahead of the season finale at Monza.

BMW M Team WRT, sitting second in the manufacturers standings, now looks ahead to the final round of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship, aiming to finish the season strongly and close out another competitive year for the BMW M Hybrid V8 programme.
